Recent initiatives in Assam, led by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), highlight how technology is reshaping education for marginalized communities.
The NIELIT Majuli Study Centre, inaugurated by MM Tripathi, Director General of NIELIT, marks a significant step in bringing advanced education to underserved regions. This facility aims to empower students from Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) by offering free training programs in cutting-edge technologies.
A flagship initiative of the center is a special boot camp focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT). Targeting 500 students from classes 9 to 12, the camp emphasizes hands-on learning to develop skills vital for the digital era. By providing access to modern technology, this initiative bridges the gap between rural and urban education, fostering equal opportunities for all.
Assam has taken proactive measures to integrate AI into its education system, setting a benchmark for other states. The Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) recently announced the inclusion of AI and robotics as vocational subjects for Class 9 students starting from the 2024-25 academic session. This curriculum will extend to Class 10 students in the 2025-26 academic year.
The reforms also include a 50% increase in practical marks for vocational subjects, underscoring the importance of experiential learning. By incorporating AI and robotics, Assam is preparing its students for future technological advancements while fostering a culture of innovation.
In a groundbreaking development, Guwahati unveiled ‘Iris,’ the first humanoid AI teacher in Northeast India. Developed in collaboration with Makerlabs Edu-Tech under a NITI Aayog initiative, Iris represents a paradigm shift in teaching methods.
The AI-powered humanoid assists in delivering personalized and interactive education, catering to the diverse needs of students. This initiative demonstrates how technology can complement traditional teaching while addressing challenges such as teacher shortages and varying learning paces.
The integration of AI and robotics in Assam’s education system is a step toward reducing the digital divide between urban and rural areas.
