Singapore-based Firmus Technologies has achieved a significant milestone, earning the prestigious Asia Pacific Data Centre Project of the Year award for its innovative AI Factory facility. This achievement highlights Firmus's commitment to advanced infrastructure and energy efficiency, addressing the escalating demands of AI computing while promoting sustainability.
Firmus’s AI Factory represents a groundbreaking effort to transform existing data centres into high-performance platforms tailored for AI computing. The project, which reimagines ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC), integrates state-of-the-art hardware and cutting-edge cooling systems. These enhancements are designed to meet both enterprise and research requirements while significantly improving energy efficiency.
For nearly a decade, Firmus has focused on tackling the energy challenges posed by the growing power demands of AI. Its AI Factory platform leverages advanced immersion cooling technology to achieve several key benefits:
The AI Factory exemplifies how innovative data centre infrastructure can address the energy demands of AI while supporting sustainable development. Achieving a partial Power Usage Effectiveness (pPUE) of 1.02, the facility reduces energy consumption by an impressive 45%. This accomplishment aligns seamlessly with Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0, which prioritizes sustainable AI growth and data centre innovation.
Tim Rosenfield, co-CEO of Firmus Technologies, elaborated on the broader vision behind the project. “By rethinking data centre design, we have created a platform that supports the growth of AI while promoting environmental sustainability. If we can do it in Singapore, where space is constrained and the humid climate is against us, we can do it anywhere,” he stated.
Firmus’s leadership team has recently welcomed Dr. Daniel Kearney as Chief Technology Officer. Formerly the Head of Technology for the ASEAN Enterprise business at AWS, Kearney now spearheads engineering initiatives at Firmus. Highlighting the growing importance of sustainable infrastructure, he remarked, “This win against established data centre players recognizes the importance of technology like ours in meeting the growth of AI and the energy challenges it brings.”
Firmus continues to advance its mission through a range of initiatives under its Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC) program. These efforts are driving efficiency and sustainability in AI infrastructure:
The deployment of the AI Factory in Singapore underscores the potential of innovative approaches to data centre design in meeting the energy demands of AI. By pioneering advanced solutions such as immersion cooling, Firmus sets a benchmark for sustainable AI development worldwide.
The company’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to addressing the challenges of AI expansion while prioritizing environmental sustainability. Through its AI Factory and related initiatives, Firmus continues to lead the way in shaping a more efficient and eco-friendly future for AI infrastructure.
